The DirtRun Ultra – Have you got what it takes?

Yes we’re delighted to announce the DirtRun Black Country Ultra is back for the 2nd year!

The inaugural 2017 was mega and we know the 2nd will be even better, so come and join us…

When: Now Sunday October 7th 2018 due to snow forcing postponement for safety.

Where: Start and finish at Baggeridge Country Park near Dudley, West Midlands. £3 parking charge.

How: The 33 mile loop is broken down into 1 x 9mile followed by 3 x 8 mile segments and can be taken on solo, as a relay pair, or in teams of 4.

The DirtRun Black Country Ultra is a fantastic scenic urban loop around our historic Black Country. Working with South Staffordshire Council and the Canal and River Trust, expect everything you love about a Pulse Pursuits event but in the form of an Ultra.

The route is set among some great urban escapes – old railway lines, canal towpaths, tunnels and other exciting things that you just don’t get to see from the roads.

What is an Ultra

An Ultra event comes under the category of long distance running, and is generally a 30+ mile running event.

We want to make our event as accessible to as many people as possible, so you can choose to enter solo, as relay pairs, or in a team of 4. 1 x 9mile followed by 3 x 8 mile segments.

Seasoned Ultra runners will enjoy the potential for a fast pace with interesting things to see throughout the route. Newcomers to this style of running will benefit from a well organised event and participant support.

The route

The start and finish venue is Baggeridge Country Park near Dudley, West Midlands. This will be the base for our event village which will provide refreshments, and post race massage.

The route itself is 99% traffic free, with just three minor, marshalled, road crossings. The majority of the route is on well surfaced disused railway lines and canal towpaths. Shoe choice is very much a personal choice.

  • From Baggeridge, the route heads north via Wombourne and Lower Penn, to Wolverhampton, and the first check point at Aldersley Stadium after 8.5miles.

  • From here it’s on around the east of Wolverhampton, down through the Coseley canal tunnel (329 metres) – head torches recommended, and on to Tipton and the second check point, at The Fountain Inn Tipton, after 17 miles

  • Leg 3 is a mandatory head torch section, as it features the 2.7km long Netherton Tunnel, one of the longest in the UK. At 24 miles, comes the third and final check point, on the edge of the Merry Hill Centre.

  • The final leg takes in Brockmoor, Pensnett, before a largely wooded, and potentially muddy, run in via Baggeridge Country Park, to the finish back at Baggeridge, and a well earned bespoke medal.

The route will be fully waymarked, and runners will also receive a set of printed instructions, a printed route map, along with a gpx file to download to your gps device.

There are 3 check points on the route, which also mark the ‘change-over/relay’ points for

teams. Each check point will offer water, cake, energy food and drink and first aid assistance.

The minimum age for runners is 18 years old on race day.

Sign up before 1st December 2017 and you’ll benefit from our Early Bird Fees.

MASSAGE at finish available at a small charge. We’ll have prizes for the first three in each category, and all finishers will receive a bespoke medal.

RACE STARTS AT 09:00

How much of my registration fee goes to charity?

We give £1 for each senior entry direct to a charity partner. Our charity partners vary by event location. Charities for 2017 include: Deaf Direct, Mary Stevens’ Hospice, St Michaels Hospice, St Richards Hospice, The Midlands Air Ambulance and The Royal Life Saving Society. Each event supports one of these charities. In addition, some of our locations are charities and we also donate to them. You can make additional charity donations on-line if you wish.

Can I get a club affiliation discount?

No. We operate across a wide range of event formats with our own compehensive insurance so an insurance affiliation does not apply.

Is there medical cover?

Pulse Pursuits takes the safety of our event participants extremely seriously. When you enter our events you do so in the knowledge that you are fit and healthy, without any conditions that could affect you adversely. It is essential that any conditions that may affect you are brought to the attention of our registration team, who will assess whether you should take part in our event. You should remember that our events take place over various terrains, roads and water. Pulse Pursuits provides medical cover for our events but cannot be held responsible for any injuries suffered. We strongly recommend that you hold your own personal insurance.

Do you offer category prizes?

Whilst our events are run for enjoyment and personal achievement and in most cases we provide a bespoke finishers medal or momento, we give prizes in each race for First, second and third in each category. Prizes and categories vary from event to event.

What should I wear?

  • For DirtRun events: Our trail events are mixed terrain and elevations and we suggest you dress appropriately. You should, especially, wear suitable running footwear with good grip for varied conditions. Generally trail shoes are recommended for all our locations. For our longer Ultra events specific kit lists are required, details of which will be issued directly to participants.

  • For JustRide events: Cycle clothing varies across event type and conditions. For all cycle only and duathlon events, it is mandatory that riders should where a correctly fitted cycle helmet whilst on the bike.

  • For PaddleSprint events: During regattas using Bellboats we provide bouyancy aids which must be worn to participate. During Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) events, bouyancy aids must be worn, these will will be provided to particpants ihring a board and paddle only. Paddlesprint events temperatures will vary throughout the year, we advise being prepared for all seasons especially when participating in a SUP event where a full or shorty wetsuit may be required.

  • In the unlikely event that damage occurs to your clothing, footwear or accessories during one of our events Pulse Pursuits will not be held responsible.

What about spectators?

We love spectators and actively welcome them, especially those that cheer on participants! Due to the nature of the locations we may have to restrict spectator access but this will be clearly signed. We respectively ask all specators to keep away from the race course, transition and safety support areas. We ensure that spectators can see the start, finish and as much of the race as possible. Also our live commentary ensures that they feel part of the action.

Are children welcome?

DirtRun: So that the whole family can join in the fun we offer, where possible, a Junior race from age 4 to 10. On some occasions the entry list may be limited to 20 Juniors to fit in with the overall race shedule. This is a shorter flat race and parents are welcome to accompany their children. We charge just £5 for each entry online and £7 for on the day entries and this includes finishers medals and goodies. This race is entered on the day at the registration. There may be uneven and slippery ground at the event and may be open water near by, so we ask that children are supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

JustRide: We do not hold Junior cycle races at all our cycle events unless specifically advertised.

PaddleSprint: We enable Juniors from 4-10 to participate in our Regattas using Bellboats as long as there are two adults per crew in addition (total of 8 max). We do not offer SUP racing for Juniors.

Is there a bag drop?

There will be a covered bag drop area available at each event and whilst we take every care possible of your kit we cannot be held responsible for any loss.

What are the car parking arrangments and charges?

There is ample parking at our events and charges vary by location. For some events we obtain a special discounted rate of £1 per car, some locations charge £3 for each car, and others charge per person unless stated otherwise. We make clear the specific arrangements for each location inadvance. We encourage car sharing.
